Meridian Studios Phase 1

Client: Inland Homes
Contractor: Inland Homes
Architect: Churchill Hui (post-planning design)
Contract Sum: £7m

Phase 1 of the ambitious Southampton area regeneration project focused on revitalizing the RiverItchen waterfront through the construction of 54 homes. This endeavor, with post-planning design by Churchill Hui, received acclaim as the Regeneration Project of the Year at the prestigious South Coast Property Awards in 2017.

The site, once home to the dormant Meridian TV studios, had left the surrounding residential area neglected. Churchill Hui inherited the project, already granted planning permission, and set out to address key challenges while enhancing the overall vision.

One pivotal adjustment involved rethinking the aesthetic and durability of the construction materials. Recognizing the coastal location’s impact on render finishes, the original plans were revised to incorporate a two-tone brick design, complementing the area’s architectural character while ensuring long-term resilience.

Additionally, the discovery of a critical fibre optic cable posed a logistical hurdle. Unable to disrupt this vital infrastructure serving the airport, Churchill Hui redesigned the affected portion of the scheme tocircumvent the cable’s path without compromising the project’s integrity.

Central to the project’s success was the reorganization of unit layouts to improve functionality and cost efficiency without compromising quality. Through collaborative value engineering with the client, Churchill Hui achieved this objective while preserving the essence of the approved planning features.

The completed housing scheme comprises an inviting horseshoe arrangement of flats, not exceeding three stories, with four terraced houses completing the loop. Recognized for its innovation, architectural excellence, and commitment to environmental considerations, the project promises to significantly enhance the River Itchen waterfront, as acknowledged at the South Coast Property Awards 2017.
